Hyatt Regency Maui Ka’anapali Beach Review: Pros And Cons

Our family loved the Hyatt Regency Maui Ka'anapali! The Hyatt Regency in Maui is the other main Hyatt property on Maui (yes, there is a third in Hana), and it is a family friendly destination on the beach, with a great pool area, and lot's to do!

Our family recently stayed for three nights in March, after leaving a frustrating stay at the Andaz Maui early.

The resort has been remodeled recently (and they're still finishing up), but it felt great. The service was top notch. And the location is solid for both lounging around the resort and exploring the island.

We also felt the value of our point redemption was phenomenal. Even if you're paying cash, this resort is a great value.

Overall Hyatt Regency Maui Ka'anapali Impressions

The Hyatt Regency in Maui is a great resort. It's large, but makes you still feel comfortable. It's right on the ocean, which is fun to look out at everyday. The other side of the resort is a golf course, so you still have nice greenery all around.

The resort is a short walk from Whaler's Village, which is a great little mall with dining options.

On the downside, this resort doesn't have the best beach (it's a 5 minute walk), and there are no included beach amenities like you find at other properties.

However, the price to value ratio is fantastic. Our family would definitely stay here again.

Our Trip Background

We actually didn't plan on staying at the Hyatt Regency in Maui, but our terrible experience at the Andaz Maui made us look for options. As such, we booked a last minute stay here, and we're so happy we did. We should have just booked this hotel from the start.

Four our stay, we were able to book three nights at 35,000 points per night (105,000 points total). We were also able to use a Suite Upgrade Award.

The cash price for this room would have been $1,800 per night, or $5,400 for the stay. That means our redemption and SUA was roughly $0.05 per point - not too bad!

To compare, the two queen room was running $579 per night during our stay.

From a Globalist perspective, the hotel is a standard Regency, with a good Regency Club open for breakfast, mid-day snacks (cookies and chips), and a light dinner. They also had a cash bar for beer and wine.

About Hyatt Regency Maui Ka'anapali

They Hyatt Regency Maui is a large resort in the Ka'anapali resort area of Maui, which is just North or Lahaina. It's about a 45 minute drive from the airport, and the entire area is massive resorts and golf courses.

The hotel has over 800 rooms, a convention center, multiple pools, restaurants, and is right on the beachfront.

Hyatt Regency Maui Location

What's Included?

Not much is included in your stay at the Hyatt Regency Maui. There are access to pools, a nice beach close by (but beach accessories are an additional charge), and some activities on property.

What About Globalists

  • Free Parking
  • Access to the Regency Club

If you're not a Globalist, parking is $25 per day for self-parking, and $40 per day for valet. The self-parking lot can get really full pretty early, so be aware.

Club access can be worthwhile if you have a Club Access Award or Globalist, but I don't think I would pay for it out of pocket.

Resort Experience

The resort is huge but it's pretty easy to navigate and there are a lot of things to do - especially around the pool!

Arrival

The arrival experience is very pleasant. The check-in area isn't every large, but the lobby itself is.

The car park area in front of the hotel can be very busy so be aware.

Self-parking is at the back of the hotel, and pretty far from the lobby, so stop and check in first before parking.

Front Desk and Lobby

The check-in experience and front desk team were great at both arrival and departure. This hotel uses water proof wristbands, so keep that in mind.

In the lobby, there are animals! The penguins (pictured above) are right in the lobby, and there are usually a couple talking parrots as well.

Shopping

There are quite a few shops right off the lobby down the hallway. Clothing, snacks, and the Regency Club are all there.

Parking

Self-parking can be challenging, so be warned. When we checked in, the staff told us the lot is usually full by 4-5pm each day. I can vouch for that. If you're driving and planning to park, you might just need to valet if you can't be back at the resort before then.

Room Impressions

We stayed in an Oceanfront Suite. It had a living room area with a table and pull-out couch, a bedrooom, and a bathroom.

There were two balconies - one off the living room area and one off the bedroom. The bedroom faces the ocean which was awesome.

Bedroom

The bedroom was on the smaller size, and the closet was essentially functional for storage. There was a king bed, and you can see the balcony and ocean view!

The only drawback is that this room is directly above the luau and dining area for conferences. While both of these activities wrap up by about 10pm, until then, the music can be noticeable.

Bathroom

The bathroom was spacious with a large walk-in shower, and a full size tub as well (you can see it off to the right of the toilet).

Housekeeping

Housekeeping was doing a good job with cleanliness and restocking towels. Our room was serviced everyday without issue.

It was nice to come back to a clean and restocked bathroom and made bedroom after exploring Maui!

On-Property Dining

There are a LOT of food options on property, and you're within walking distance of so many more options (just head down to Whaler's Village or any of the other resorts).

We had breakfast in the Regency Club each day, and the also snacked there as we passed by.

Main Restaurant: Japengo

Japengo is their signature restaurant, that's Asian fusion with lots of sushi dishes. The location is off the lobby, above the pool, overlooking the beach. You couldn't ask for a better location.

Steakhouse: Son'z Steakhouse

This is another of the main restaurant options. We didn't dine here, but it gets great reviews.

Breakfast: Swan Court Breakfast

This is the main option for a sit-down breakfast. However, since we had Regency Club access, we didn't venture in here during out stay.

Poolside: 'Ūmalu

This is the poolside dining and drink option, located by the main pool (not the kids pool). It's kind of a walk to the kids pool and slide area. This place has great drinks and simple food options.

Regency Club

The Regency Club was great during our stay. Since we just enjoy a simple breakfast before we head out, it covered everything we needed. There's also an outside patio area for seating as well.

The Regency Club also has a comfortable lounge area that is great for playing games or just escaping the heat.

Resort Activities

Most of the resort activities are focused on the pool and beach. The pool at the Hyatt Regency Maui is pretty awesome, with water slides for the kids, a toddler area, and more. I'm sad they removed the grotto area, but the pool is still pretty fun.

The real goal with Maui is to get out and explore the island! You can see our list of our favorite kid-friendly activities to do on Maui.

One of the coolest activities that the Hyatt Regency Maui offers is called "Tour of the Stars", where you can go up on the roof at 10pm and look through telescopes. We missed it during our last stay, but it's something you should consider.

Alternatives

The Hyatt Regency Maui is located in Ka'anapali, which is kind of the "mega" resort area of Maui. Right along the same stretch of beach you have the Westin Maui Resort (which is recently remodeled and looking amazing) and the Sheraton Maui Resort.

Both of these resorts were slightly more expensive than the Hyatt Regency when booking.

The Westin Maui resort was offering a two queen room at $704 per night, and their suite was $1,108 per night.

The Sheraton was offering a two queen room at $653 per night, and their suite was $1,196 per night.

If you're a Bonvoy member, these resorts are both options for you though.

Final Thoughts

They Hyatt Regency Maui is a great property with awesome pools, solid beach access, and good rooms. The price to value ratio was awesome, and we had a great experience at the resort.

Plus, walking in the area is great - with just a short 10 minute walk to Whaler's Village.

I'd definitely consider this resort again the next time our family stays in Maui. It might be our go-to Maui resort in the future.
